JOAN WILLIAMS BA Artist's Statement 2013
My work is landscape based-often abstraction, but sometimes I look at the whole scene and my paintings become more representational. Each constituent part has its own logic and pattern. This forms the basis of my abstracted pictures where I might examine a small detail which, in its turn becomes part of the whole.
My BA project was based on the colour and textures of trees but this work has now expanded and I have been examining textures in general, for example, rusty machinery and butterfly wings. Since becoming an artist I have realised that the world is full of texture and pattern whether minute or enormous in size. My paintings are an investigation and an appreciation of this.
