Sally Verrall

After completing a course in Art and Design at the former Brighton Polytechnic she decided to experiment with textiles, with the emphasis in particular on machine embroidery.

Living in Steyning, the surrounding countryside and Downs, inspired her first to paint in watercolours, encapsulating the light, colour and mood of the seasons. Since then her work has developed to incorporate the use of textiles. She feels the various textures of the flora and fauna of the countryside transfer well, using a variety of fabrics and stitches, together with acrylic paint, paper and transparent materials to achieve the desired effect of the finished embroidery.

Travelling abroad has developed her perspective further. The sights, colours, light and heat of the countries she has visited fascinate her. The comparison between say, the subtlety of the South Downs to that of the sights of Egypt or Morocco, feed her imagination. Tuscany, in particular, is a favourite place and she much enjoyed transferring through fabric, the atmosphere of this historic and beautiful part of Italy.
